Underground Coal Mining Project in South Africa



The greenfield Yzermyn Underground Coal Mining project (Atha Africa Ventures) is located 58 km southwest of Piet Retief town in the Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme municipality (within the greater Gert Sibande District municipality), Mpumalanga province of South Africa. The nearest  township is Dirkiesdorp located at 13 km to the north east, while  Wakkerstroom  located at – 21km to the SW. The project is 20km northeast of Wakkerstroom, 15km northwest of Dirkiesdorp and 58km southwest of Piet Retief.

The development’s Project’s mining right area covers 8 360ha over 12 farms., while the prospecting right area is ~2 500ha, over 12 farms. The asset has SAMREC-/JORC-compliant resources of ~121Mt (GTIS), based on additional  drilling data and upgraded CPR, which has an capacity for  expected annual run-of-mine (ROM) production at full ramp-up of 2.2MTPA of export as well as domestic  product quality for with 16 to 20 years life of mine (LOM).

The Yzermyn project aims to deliver quality-grade coal for domestic markets, Eskom and export markets while managing the production and logistics costs effectively. The mine plan takes cognisance of optimal run-of-mine (ROM) and product within general export market specifications.

The prospecting right was granted on 17 August 2006 and renewed on 24 November 2011. Atha Africa Ventures (AAV) lodged a mining right application with the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) on 20 19 March 2013, which was accepted by the DMR on 25 April 2013.The mining right was granted by DMR on14th April’2015
