Revolutionizing Bulk Logistics Through Indian Railways' GPWIS

In line with Atha Group’s long-term vision for integrated and sustainable infrastructure development, we have made a forward-thinking investment under Indian Railways’ General Purpose Wagon Investment Scheme (GPWIS) — a landmark initiative introduced to promote private sector participation in the acquisition, maintenance, and operation of railway wagons.GPWIS is a key enabler in the Government of India’s efforts to modernize freight transportation, decongest highways, and reduce carbon emissions. Through this scheme, qualified private entities can invest in railway wagons and receive long-term, assured allotment of rakes for specified routes and cargo types. This not only enhances supply chain reliability but also supports industrial players in building self-reliant, cost-efficient logistics ecosystems.

By participating in GPWIS, Atha Group has secured long-term access to dedicated rail transport infrastructure, particularly for the movement of bulk commodities like coal, iron ore, dolomite, and limestone — critical inputs for our steel and power manufacturing divisions. This initiative ensures uninterrupted inbound and outbound material flow to our facilities across eastern and central India.

Ownership of Railway Rakes: Enhancing Efficiency & Resilience

As part of our GPWIS investment, Atha Group owns and operates a dedicated fleet of 10 railway rakes, allocated as follows:

  • 6 Rakes serving Narbheram Power & Steel Pvt. Ltd. (NPSPL)
  • 2 Rakes serving Amalgam Steel & Power Ltd. (AS&PL)
  • 2 Rakes serving Amalgam Steel Pvt. Ltd. (ASPL)

These rakes are custom-built to handle high-volume freight operations, designed with durability and safety in mind. The direct ownership and operation of these rakes offer multiple strategic advantages:

  • Complete control over scheduling and freight movement
  • Reduced turnaround times and improved rolling stock availability
  • Minimized dependency on third-party logistics or public freight operators
  • Improved supply chain reliability, especially during peak seasons or transport bottlenecks
  • Optimized cost efficiency through predictable freight planning and asset utilization

Sustainable Logistics & Environmental Responsibility

Our GPWIS initiative also forms a core component of Atha Group’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) framework. Rail freight, compared to road transport, produces significantly lower emissions per ton-kilometer. By shifting a large share of our logistics operations to rail, we actively reduce our carbon footprint, contributing to India’s national goals for climate action and sustainable industrial growth.

Furthermore, rail-based logistics reduce traffic congestion, lower accident rates, and support the development of multimodal transport corridors — aligning with Atha Group’s mission to lead with responsibility and innovation.

Looking Ahead

Our GPWIS-backed logistics infrastructure gives Atha Group a distinct operational edge and future-readiness in a resource-intensive sector. As India advances toward high-efficiency transport networks through the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan and National Logistics Policy, our investments are fully aligned to capitalize on emerging opportunities in rail connectivity, digital logistics, and green mobility.

With proactive investments like GPWIS, Atha Group continues to deliver on its commitment to building resilient, sustainable, and smart supply chain solutions, securing a competitive advantage for the next generation of infrastructure and manufacturing.
